posted this on twitter and people wanted more european trivia so i might as well crosspost here here's another funny piece of trivia, also about italy (and the holy see, this is a weird one) but this time is specifically about laws regarding the church and freedom of speech due to a series of laws that were passed then revised then left there etc it is still technically illegal in italy to specifically attack the "christian god of national religion" in some regions it is, regardless, very common to hear epithets comparing him to a pig or a dog, but in theory (even tho this is basically never enforced) doing it in public could result in you being fined the funniest thing is that despite all of this you not only people keep using the same 2-3 forms to insult God constantly BUT THIS IS ALSO VERY COMMONLY USED BY OLD GRANDMAS WHO GO TO CHURCH EVERY DAY because it just became a normal thing and there is not a lot of thought behind it it is also NOT illegal to do the same with the Virgin Mary or the saints tho…
